Overview
Calibration is the first map you play in Cooperative, getting both robots used to the concept of thinking with portals (and pings!). It is designed to be very simplistic, not really a puzzle but rather a tutorial. Of course, this means speedrunners have torn it to shreds.
General Route
First off, you have to have a key bound to stopvideos
and a key bound to taunt
. You also need r_portal_use_pvs_optimization
set to 0 to see OoB if you plan to do calibration skip.
Calibration Skip
This trick is very hard to explain in text, please watch the video.
Calibration Skip tutorial
- Start as normal, but after getting the portal guns, both robots jump back to the side they came from.
- Blue shoots a portal on the far wall while Orange shoots a portal on the floor under the extended portal surface facing towards Blue's side.
- Blue looks through the gap next to the same portal surface and replaces Orange's portal.
- Orange falls through this portal and places a portal on the very top right of the wall on their left.
- While Orange is doing this, Blue moves their second portal onto the extended portal surface and walks into the indented corner next to the start.
- Orange comes back through Blue's portal and replaces the portal they just came out of.
- Orange stands on the other side of his portal, as far forward as possible.
- Blue lines up by looking at the far corner of the 1st white tile from the left in the ceiling.
- Blue walks forward and jumps slightly before hitting Orange, and ends up OoB.
- Looking toward the end of the level, Blue walks fairly far right (but not far enough to fall off the map, which is a softlock), and then shoots their portal all the way across the map at the little black box that juts out from the rest of the map.
- Orange jumps down from their portal into Blue's portal, and places one of their portals beside the portal they come out of.
- Blue joins Orange at the end of the map by placing their other portal on the wall in front of them.
- Orange walks around some invisible geometry to get to the area above the ending door.
- Orange then places their other portal on the invisible wall opposite the ending door.
- Blue comes through Orange's portal and pushes up against the ending door's wall.
- Orange pushes up against Blue (note that both robots are invisible OoB) and Blue a/d spams.
- Orange should fall through into the area between the ending door and the fizzler. Be careful not to go through the fizzler yet (this is a softlock), and instead push up against the ending door to open it.
- Orange places a portal on the small portalable surface on the ceiling of the right side of the room
- Blue jumps through Orange's portal, landing on the edge of the glass panel in the middle of the room.
- Blue walks across the edge then jumps to the button, presses it, and both players hop to the disassemblers.
Jeez, what a wall of text! Watch the video if you didn't understand any of that.
Dialogue
- Jump and use your
taunt
bind when GLaDOS finishes saying, "Please wave to your partner." - It is optimal for Blue to ping their favorite animal when GLaDOS says, "Both of you have been equipped with a ping tool. Blue, pleAse use your ping tool".
- It is optimal for Orange to spam their ping bind as much as possible, as being slightly too early on the cue can eat your input. The cue is at the end of, "Orange, please use your ping tool to select your favorite element from the periodic table."
- At the end, enter the disassemblers as fast as possible.
