Overview

Ricochet is the second map of The Return. It's generally regarded as one of the more annoying maps of Portal 2, not from route difficulty, but from annoyance with physics objects.

General Route

Easier Route

Good position on the back wall for the first portal to reportal to, getting to the cube

Start by shooting a portal on the top right of the tall wall surface in the back of the chamber, and perform a reportal from either the ground shooting at the wall, or a wall next to the entry door shooting backwards off the wall where the first portal is. If you fail either of these portals, you can fling from the pit over to the cube. Pick up the cube, and jump down to the faith plate, flinging up towards the laser and panels. Place the cube to interrupt the laser, bringing down the first set of panels.

Jump back to the ground, and in air shoot a portal on the top left of the wall that the entry door is on. Shoot another portal on that wall that you can stand in, and looking up and left you'll be able to see a portal surface up by the pedestal button that drops the laser cube. Portal stand up to that surface, and hit the button. Drop down, grab the cube, and get onto the faith plate.

Box Bounce

Box Bounce is a trick used in both the easier and harder routes for Ricochet, that involves using a cube to stop horizontal velocity while preserving vertical velocity, allowing you to skip putting down the second set of panels.

When getting onto the faith plate with the first set of panels down, look backwards holding a cube slightly upwards. About a second before bouncing off the first set of wall faith plates, let go of the cube and look slightly lower than the horizontal. After bouncing off the faith plate, pick up the cube. The timing for this precise, and is something you'll just need to practice. You should be launched into the air, with no horizontal velocity, and able to strafe over to the final button and exit door.

Harder Route

Start the same way as the beginner route, by reportaling or flinging over to the testing cube. When over by the cube, shoot a portal on the ground, and in the pit in front of the cube platform. Grab the cube, and jump down into the pit, looking straight up. When you reach a peak height coming out of the portal on the ground, let go of the cube, and strafe over near the faith plate.

Place the portal you had in the pit on the back side of the floor surfaces, so the cube flings out of the portal and hits the laser, temporarily bringing down the first set of panels. Land on the faith plate, and when flinging, grab the cube. There's two options on what will happen next. If your timing for getting on the faith plate is correct, then you holding the cube will be flung by the panels raising back up directly to the exit door platform. If not, then you may need to perform a box bounce. Timing here is specific, and something that takes practice.

Full Game Dialogue

The optimal dialogue for the Elevator Fade is entering the elevator during the break after GLaDOS says "Humans".

"Well, you passed the test. I didn't see the deer today. I did see some humans. [*] But with you here I've got more test subjects than I'll ever need."
