Overview
Test is the first test in Chapter 8, The Itch.
This is the first time Wheatley appears after throwing the player down an elevator shaft in Core. In this chamber, Wheatley is testing his variance on the Weighted Storage Cube, the Franken-turret- a hybrid between a Weighted Storage Cube and two Aperture Science Sentry Turrets.
General Route
Test has three "sections": a catwalk section, the Frankenturret Testing Chamber, and Test.
Catwalk
After leaving the elevator, the catwalk takes the player to an office room, similar to those used to observe testing, with a hole in the back wall (shown at right).
Through the hole, the player can see a portalable surface, which can be portaled to from the walls of the office. After portaling, the player goes down further catwalk to an elevator, then down more catwalk to a holding room of sorts. The Frankenturret Testing Chamber is just beyond the door.
Frankenturret Testing Chamber
After Wheatley finishes his monologue ("You've got one hour. SOLVE IT!"), the door will open to the Frankenturret Testing Chamber. In the room are many Frankenturrets. The fastest strategy here is to opt for a cubethrow and two to three quick bunnyhops to the exit door. Variances of this will be discussed in Full Game Run Specific.
After exiting the Frankenturret Testing Chamber, time is of the essence. Speed-wallstrafe and bunnyhop to the panel elevator, which will take you to the Test section.
Test
Wheatley is really, really proud of this one. The level layout is shown at right.
To complete the level, press the button and portal over to the other side. Congratulations, you've done it!
But wait, there's more. Precisely one more. "Since making tests is so difficult.. why don't you just keep solving this test?"
Simply do it again, then head to the elevator. The Dialogue section will help with this.
Challenge Mode Specific
There are only subtle differences from the general route, but if all are employed, you can save several seconds.
Dialogue Starting Trigger
The trigger for the dialogue starting, which, in turn, controls how fast the door to the Frankenturret Testing Chamber opens, is located at the first corner after getting through the entrance door. Speedy stairhops and a good door entry are crucial to save those under-appreciated hundredths of a second.
Cubethrow / Panel Elevator
In the Frankenturret Testing Chamber, cubes are spawned semi-randomly. If you listen with headphones next to the door, you can determine the positions of some- ideally, you want one in front of you, which is semi-common. Do the cubethrow as described in General Route.
In the panel elevator shortly thereafter, you can jump in the elevator to save some time and preshoot portals on the opposite side of the chamber, as well as prehopping the ground.
Outside of that, it's just speed. The first time through Test, the object is to get through the door as fast as possible, and the second time around, it's fastest to prioritize the button press. Head directly to the elevator.
